Short Stories
Kitty Litter - Jon lives in denial as his beloved cat Garfield becomes a ravenous, gluttoned shell of his former self. Based on Will Burke's work and the r/imsorryjon subreddit. What a strange internet phenomenon for such a cute and cuddly lazy mascot!
Reunion - A "Chinese Menu" story. Mix and match random prompts and create something new. My prompts were an old man who can’t sleep gets locked in the mall overnight + a man who has OCD plays hide-and-seek with other grownups.
Poems
Border
I've finally made itTo the promised land
Narcos and their guns separating
My sphere from theirs
"Don't worry mija,
you'll be safe there," Mama said to me
Her nervous glint made
my stomach churn
We stepped onto the truck
Like a shadow consuming my
very being
And left
Fear and excitement
Pulsed through my veins
My head spinned with the idea
of a new tomorrow,
of a new beginning
where I don't have to
keep my mouth shut
when the shielded men
stuff their faces with
that forbidden powder
that make them like dogs
I don't know how long
I've been in darkness
The rumbling of the road
under me being my only
reminder of reality
And then it stopped
Have we made it?
Have we reached the land
of freedom and opportunity?
The doors swung open
And in a moment I go to sleep
I woke up to a peculiar rattling
My mama isn't here
My heart sank at the sight
of shielded men much darker,
danger plastered
all over their faces
The same guns I've come to abhor
sat snugly under their arms
Decorations for their cause
I became like a captured bird
They must be mistaken
I belong to the promised land,
Like the one my mama told me about
It's as if I never left home
The word freedom slips from my lips
Leaving a bitter taste on my tongue
Bewildered, I can't help but think that
Maybe my world
isn't so different from theirs
Conqueror
everyone will know the legend of his name
the emperor's presence proved eternal
servants, soldiers, savants before his throne
was it worth all they had to sacrifice?
lung-piercing smoke clouded the kingdom's view
survivors of that tyrant will rise
curdling screams began to rise
until their last words were his name
that tall, haunted figure filling their view
etched into their eyes, eternal
women filled with sweet innocence, a sacrifice
their bodies steps leading to the throne
vast lands under a single throne
mountains to evergreen pastures flowing with ryes
trampled by those devils of Tartarus who sacrifice
their lives, their name
for a man thought to be eternal,
undying, that omnipotent, blood-stained view
but now that man steps down from their view
an void space that was once his throne
gone is the lie of his eternal
being, ghost never to be on the rise
to revive his name
savages no longer a sacrifice
a festering thought in place of the sacrifice
that lost empire viewed
"no one could ever compare to his name"
the phantom responds "restore me, my throne"
a land in ruins, a terrible temptation arises
are we ever to be eternal
again, without him, an eternally
damned, nourishing sacrifice
only the fittest have risen
and have seeped from him a view
of that delipidated throne
everyone abhorred the legend of his throne knew the cruelty of his name
Gone
I've been stuck, been stuckin this suffocating blue
oh, please help me, doctor
before I bid myself adieu
the anchor of anhedonia
drowns me further within
even the frowning anglerfish
reminds me of him
"I can take it away," she said
"I can take your pain."
and what flickered my savior
became Harry Harlow the insane
the fluorescent capsule was presented before me
diminutive in size but ever so tempting
serotonin or sentimentality
to flip a coin while I'm lamenting
it's too cruel
and yet we became one
to move on, my dear
the barbed wire of my conscience must become undone
to let you go, my dear
this anchor must set sail
piercing metal into a weightless blur
into the heavens where your beauty never fails
to amaze me
my consciousness where your odyssey lives on
has granted me ataraxia
but that was only realized
when you were gone
Flower Children
Stuck in a funeral of self worthHow far will my humbleness take me?
Little white heathers surround me
Soon turn to poppies
I’ll leave this earth with nothing but them
How far will my silence take me?
It seems like my ferns will wither
My garden turns to ash
Who’s to say
My heartstrings weren’t the fire?
Amongst the aspersion, the denigration
The little white heathers remain
Why didn’t they leave me
Like the rest of my flower children?
I await their dispersion
But alas, maybe these heathers are different
Instead, I wait for my garden to grow
And for my flower children to flourish
Again
